Updated Road Conditions in Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma
Oklahoma Road Conditions (Ice & Slick Spots)
Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) reports:
-
Crews are actively clearing and treating highways, interstates, bridges, and overpasses statewide.
-
Icy and slick conditions remain possible, especially on overpasses, bridges, ramps, shoulders, and shaded areas. Overnight refreezing is continuing to create hazards even where roads appeared clearer earlier in the day.
-
Main highways (I-35, I-40, US-69, US-81) often have two lanes cleared, but slick spots and black ice are still concerns and can appear quickly.
-
Secondary or rural roads — especially less-treated county roads — may still be snow-packed and icy. Local law enforcement strongly suggests caution.
-
Travel is still discouraged if unnecessary, and drivers should allow extra time, slow down, and follow road-clearing instructions (don’t pass plows).
Bottom line for OK:
Ice and slick conditions are still present in many areas, especially early mornings and on elevated surfaces. Main routes are better but still require caution.
Northeast Texas Conditions
-
After recent winter weather, many areas are cold and dry now, but freezing temperatures keep residual ice possible, especially on untreated back roads or bridges.
-
TxDOT previously urged drivers to avoid travel during winter storms and has been treating roads, but cold conditions can refreeze wet spots quickly.
Bottom line for TX:
Main highways may be in better shape, but ice can still form in low spots, bridges, and shaded sections — be cautious and check DriveTexas.org or 511 before heading out.
Practical Tips for Driving in Ice
-
Assume black ice where surface looks wet but temperatures are below freezing.
-
Go well below speed limits, keep large following distances, and avoid sudden braking.
-
Bridges and overpasses freeze first and stay icy longer.
-
If travel is avoidable, delay it.
